At an altitude of over 3,000 meters above sea level lies Cusco, one of the most mysterious cities in Peru. Once the capital of the Inca Empire, it is considered the archaeological and historical heart of South America, still enveloped in ancient mystique. According to legend, the city was founded by Manco Cápac, the first Inca, who came from the shores of Lake Titicaca.

Visits to architectural sites:

Sacsayhuamán Fortress – a massive ceremonial and defensive complex built by the Incas in the 15th century. Today, it consists of three tiers of walls constructed using cyclopean masonry — enormous stone blocks, some weighing over 3,000 tons, transported from dozens of kilometers away. Some archaeologists believe parts of the structure predate the Incas themselves.

Qenqo Temple – an archaeological site in the Sacred Valley shaped like an amphitheater carved into rock. This was one of the primary places for sacred Inca rituals. The area includes four temples on the mountainside: the Puka Pukara fortress and the Tambomachay Water Temple among them.

Koricancha Temple – the legendary “Temple of Gold,” once the most revered sanctuary of the Inca Empire. When the conquistadors arrived, they destroyed the temple and built the Santo Domingo Convent on its foundations. According to legend, the walls and interiors were covered in sheets of gold, and inside stood a large golden altar and a sun disk depicting the Sun God Inti.

Return to the hotel. Rest and overnight.

Breakfast. At the scheduled time, meet your guide at the hotel and transfer to the railway station. Board the train and travel to Aguas Calientes (Hot Springs).

Then, begin your guided excursion to Machu Picchu, the lost city of the Incas, which existed for just over a century. It was built by Emperor Pachacutec as a royal estate and sacred retreat. The city included a palace complex, noble residences, and temples.

Machu Picchu remains one of the world’s greatest mysteries — it was suddenly abandoned, and archaeologists still do not know why. Located high in the mountains, at an altitude of 2,450 meters above sea level, the city was never discovered or destroyed by the conquistadors.

Machu Picchu was rediscovered in 1911 by American explorer Hiram Bingham. Its construction techniques continue to amaze modern engineers: the perfectly fitted stone blocks, the earthquake-resistant terraces, and the way the architecture harmoniously blends into the surrounding landscape.

Since 1983, Machu Picchu has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and since 2007, it has been recognized as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

In the afternoon, descend to Aguas Calientes. Enjoy lunch at the traditional restaurant El Mapi. Return by train to Cusco. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel.

Breakfast. Transfer to the bus station for the tourist bus Wonder to the city of Puno.

Along the way you will stop in the village of Andahuaylillas, famous for the San Pedro Church of Andahuaylillas. Because of its incredible murals, this church is often called the “Sistine Chapel of South America.” It was built in 1631 on the foundation of an ancient Inca temple. The interior is stunningly beautiful and richly decorated, while the exterior is quite modest. The unique paintings and exquisite stucco make this church the hallmark of the village and a treasure of the Urubamba Valley.

Next stop – the Raqchi Temple. This archaeological complex of the Inca era was once an important religious center located at an altitude of 3,500 meters above sea level. The temple, 92 meters long and 25 meters wide, was dedicated to the creator god Viracocha. It is the only Inca monument where columns were used to support the roof — there were 22 of them.

Next stops: La Raya (4,400 meters above sea level) and Pucara, where you will visit the Lithic Museum.

Around 18:00 — arrival in Puno, the capital and largest city of the Puno Province in southeastern Peru. It lies at an altitude of 3,860 meters on the shores of Lake Titicaca, the world’s highest navigable lake. It was here on Lake Titicaca that Thor Heyerdahl built his famous reed boat “Kon-Tiki.”

For many Peruvians, Lake Titicaca is a sacred place. They believe that Manco Cápac, the first Inca leader, was a direct descendant of the Sun and was born in the lake’s waters. Today, the Uros people living on the lake’s floating islands consider themselves “people of the lake” by birth.

Excursion to the floating reed islands of Uros — more than 40 man-made islands. Here you will learn the history of the islands and their people, buy numerous local souvenirs, and ride on a traditional reed boat.

To experience true Peruvian exoticism, you will visit Taquile Island in the depths of Lake Titicaca. Time here seems to stand still. Residents follow their own traditions and moral codes; there is no crime, no police, no vehicles, no cats or dogs. The main settlement lies high in the mountains at 3,950 meters.

The island is famous for its strong ethnic heritage, especially its ancient weaving traditions. In 2005, Taquile’s textile art was proclaimed a “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” by UNESCO.

Founded in 1925 and located in the former residence of a Peruvian viceroy, this 18th-century colonial mansion stands atop a pyramid. The museum showcases an extraordinarily rich collection of ceramics, textiles, jewelry, gold, mummies, and one of the world’s largest collections of pre-Columbian erotic pottery.

The museum holds 45,000 artifacts, each telling the story, daily life, and culture of the Inca, Moche, Nazca, and Chimu civilizations.
