Tour Overview

This is definitely a trek for nature lovers and for those who love the great outdoors! This is a perfect opportunity to trek through the Annapurna Conservation Area that takes you to the highest pass and the deepest valley in the world. Thorong La Pass (5,416m/17,769ft) and the Kali Gandaki Gorge (5,571m) are just two of the attractions of this amazing adventure. This is a chance to discover why this is the most popular trekking region in Nepal. You will follow trails through striking rhododendron, oak, bamboo and cyprus forests and be surprised at the proximity of the enormous snow-covered peaks: Annapurna I, II, III, IV, Dhaulagiri (8167m) (meaning white beautiful mountain in Sanskrit), Machapuchare (Fish Tail), Annapurna South and Manaslu. You will also get to visit one of the highest lakes in the world, Tilicho Lake (4919m) and experience the distinctive cultures of the many villagers living in this far-flung region. A visit to the famous Buddhist and Hindu holy site at Muktinath is a peaceful experience in a land where there are numerous different sects existing in harmony. It is said that there are over a 100 varieties of orchids in the area, as well as numerous animal species like the Martin deer, Langur monkey and the elusive Snow Leopard.

Trekking through this region will expose you to the fascinating Sherpas, their warm friendly smiles and who are also famous for their hardiness as high altitude climbers. Their reputation is well deserved and respected worldwide among climbers.

Your journey begins at Kathmandu with an entire day of seeing the sights of Kathmandu Valley. The trek itself starts from Syange and takes you through the following villages: Dharapani (1,960m/6,430ft), Chame (2,710m/8,891ft), Pisang (3,300m/10824ft), Manang (3,500m/11,482ft), Yak Kharka (4,110m/13,484ft), Thorong Phedi (4420m/14501ft), Thorong La Pass (5416m/17764ft), Muktinath (3,800/12,467ft) then drive to Jomsom (2,700m) and on to Pokhara (8,50m). The last part of this trek is a drive from Pokhara back to Kathmandu (1,350m). You will see that from the very beginning of the trek we head slowly to higher altitudes. This is said to be the best way to acclimatize. We will likewise spend a day at Manang to better acclimatize and prepare ourselves before ascending to Thorong La Pass, the highest point on the trek.

Itinerary

Sherpa Expedition & Trekking staff will greet you at Tribhuvan International Airport and take you to your hotel. This is followed by a briefing covering all aspects of the trek. With some spare time in the afternoon, you can explore the tourist hub of Thamel until the evening at which time there will be a special Nepalese welcome dinner.

A long drive will take us to where our trekking begins. This is an fitting time to sit back, relax and take in the sights of the changing countryside; rivers, terraced farmlands and views of the dazzling Himalayas. Tonight we will stay at a guesthouse with all meals included.

Just before reaching Manang, at Tal, we cross a bridge and then follow the trail through terraced farmlands, by waterfalls and on to Koto Village before arriving at Dharapani, one of the largest villages in the Manang Valley. We will stay here overnight in a guesthouse with all meals included.

A bit of a hard trek today as we ascend along some treed ridges on our way to Chame. Instead of always looking down, we must remember to look up to where we will see some massive snowy peaks: Lamjung Himal, Annapurna II, and Annapurna IV (7,525m). There is also a hot natural spring on the trail where we can sit back and relax our tired muscles. Tonight we will stay at a guesthouse with all meals included.

We walk through a sheer and narrow valley where we have our first view of Paungda Danda, a colossal curved rock face soaring 1500m up from the river bed. From here we can look up to the enormous Annapurna II and Pisang Peak. We will then descend to Manang Valley while enjoying the beautiful landscape. Tonight we will stay at a guesthouse in Pisang with all meals included.

The trail heads higher today to Ghyaru Village. Along the trail will be fortunate to have some delightful views of Annapurna II and other snow-clad peaks, as well as the glacier of Annapurna IV – that is clearly visible from Ghyaru. We will have a lunch break at Ghyaru and then head on to Ngawal. Once more we must remember to look skyward where you will see the impressive Pisang and Annapurna peaks. You will know Ngawal village is close once you reach the Mani wall and the fluttering Tibetan prayer flags. At Ngawal we can gaze down to Humde Village. We then head down to the villages of Bhakra and Braga before coming to Manang where we will stay in a guesthouse overnight with all meals provided.

It is recommended by health experts to stay active when spending time acclimatizing. We will take a short trek to Bhojo Gumba – a monastery or to Gangapurna Lake. We can also trek to Vraga Village where we can visit the Himalayan Rescue Association who can inform us about the condition of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Tonight we will stay at a guesthouse in Manang with all meals provided.

After leaving Manang we cross the river before coming to Tenki Village and then head up the Marsyangdi Valley passing several small villages, such as Ghunsa, and pass through some scrubby terrain, all the while heading higher. We will also observe yak and mountain horses grazing on the alpine pastures before reaching Yak Kharka where we will stay overnight at a guesthouse with all meals included.

Today the trail is nearly all uphill to Thorong Phedi. We first have to cross a suspension bridge and then will later reach Ledar Village. From here we once again climb higher below the cliffs until we come to Thorong Phedi, the last village before Thorong La Pass. From this altitude we have some spectacular views of several high peaks: Mt. Gundang, Mt. Syagang, Thorong Peak and Mt. Khatungkang. Tonight we will stay at a guesthouse at Thorong Phedi with all meals included.

Today is very likely the most physically demanding day of the trek. The higher altitude contributes to the degree of difficulty and sometimes strong winds in these upper regions. Along the trail, we may pass sheep, yaks, and merchants transporting their goods. Once we reach Thorong La Pass we will be rewarded with majestic views of Annapurna, Gangapurna, and the eye-catching peak of Khatungkang (6484m). After leaving the pass we descend around 1600 meters. The dazzling Mt. Dhaulagiri (Dhavali giri, meaning “White Mountain”) is the highest mountain that is entirely in Nepal. The trail down is more undulating and fairly easy prior to reaching Muktinath where we stay the night.

After leaving Muktinath we descend around 1200 meters to the Kali Gandaki River valley with a short stop at Ekle Bhatti (meaning one inn) a small village with 3-4 teahouses. From here our trek follows a winding trail for another 2 hours until we reach Jomson, the headquarters of the Mustang region near the Kali Gandaki River.

Today we drive through the Kali Gandaki Gorge, wedged between two massive mountain ranges, Mt. Annapurna and Mt. Dhaulagiri. Once back at Pokhara Sherpa Expedition & Trekking staff will take you to your hotel where you can rest or stroll around Phewa Tal (lake), or maybe walk along the lakeside and enjoy a cold drink or coffee at one of the many cafes. We will stay at a hotel at Lakeside with breakfast and lunch included.

Today we drive back to Kathmandu. You can look back on this classic trek and applaud yourself on enduring some pretty hard long days on the trail. Tonight we will celebrate with a farewell dinner hosted by Sherpa Expedition and Trekking. Tonight we stay at a hotel with breakfast included.

This is the day you say farewell to Nepal. Sherpa Expedition and Trekking will take you to the airport at least 3 hours prior to your departure. Once on the plane, you can look back on your time in Nepal and plan your next fantastic adventure to this mountainous country.
