During the 1930s, archaeologists carried out excavations at the Arasta bazaar behind the Blue Mosque in Sultanahmet Square, Istanbul. The dig unearthed floor mosaics that date back to the Byzantine period. The fair turned into a museum and opened to the public in 1953. 

The Great Palace Mosaics Museum features mosaics of hunting scenes, fighting animals, farmers working in the fields, Dionysus as a child sitting on Pan's shoulders, and other scenes.
