The religious ceremony of the Whirling Dervish dates back 800 years. The Mevlevi Order, was founded by the followers of Jalaluddin Muhammad Balkhi Rumi in the 13th century. The Mevlevi Sama Ceremony, also called the Whirling Dervish Show, was listed among the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by Unesco in 2008. The sama (whirling dervish) ceremony represents men's journey to the truth by exalting with love and leaving their nafs (which can be translated as "psyche," "ego," or "soul"). After he matured during this journey, he returned to the world at the end of the ceremony.
