Up to the beginning of the 20th century, Fener was the Greek Orthodox district of Istanbul. In fact, "Fener" comes from a Greek word meaning lantern or lighthouse. We'll also see the Church of Panagia Mouchliotissa, also known as the Church of St Mary of the Mongols, which is the only Byzantine church that was never converted to a mosque and has always been a Greek Orthodox Church. On the day the Ottomans conquered Constantinople, the area around the church was the site of a brave last stand against the Ottomans, but it did not succeed. This is how the church got its Turkish name "Kanli Kilise" meaning Bloody Church or Church of the Blood. There's a lot to see on the colourful streets of this UNESCO protected area.
