Tour Overview
This 12-day trek will take you to the exact place where Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay planned their assault on the world’s highest peak Mt. Everest (8848m). The trail takes you near lakes, over glaciers, and through the distinctive Sherpa villages that are home to probably the most skilled and respected high altitude climbers in the world. Their skills and ability to adjust to high altitudes has made it possible for many expeditions to scale these soaring 8000-meter peaks.
This well-known trek and popular trek in the World Heritage Listed Sagamartha National Park takes you to Kala Patthar, a popular viewpoint where the views are truly stunning as you gaze over the vast landscape and snow-covered peaks that tower above. The flora and fauna, such as Nepal’s national flower – the rhododendron, musk deer and the always present yak’s grazing add to the appeal of this adventure.
We begin our 12 day trek with a short 30 minute scenic flight to Lukla, where we put on our boots and head off on the trail to Phakding Village. We then head to the meeting point for many treks and expeditions, the Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar, a lively modern town. From Namche Bazaar we head to Tengboche and its renowned Buddhist monastery, Dawa Choling Gompa. From the monastery you will hear echo the unforgettable mantras of the monks and nuns that create a tranquil and peaceful atmosphere. Sherpas nearly always pray before heading to the mountains, believing prayer will ensure a safe passage. The next village we come to is Thukla from where we begin heading to higher elevations. We then come to Lobuche (4,940m /16,210 ft) from where we have panoramic views of the Himalayas. Our next stop is Everest Base Camp (5364m), the highest point on the trek. This is where you can think just how Hillary and Norgay felt as they planned their ascent of the highest peak in the world, keeping in mind this was 67 years ago and they did not have technology like we do today to assist them.
The next stunning feature of this trek is the gigantic Khumbu Glacier, rising from (4,900m/16,100ft) at its lowest point to (7,600m/ (24,900ft) at its source higher up the mountain. Gorak Shep (5,185m) and Kala Patthar viewpoint are next stops on the trail. To ensure we get the best views from Kala Patthar we will get up very early in the morning when the air is pure and the light is perfect to catch the splendor of the sun rising over the mountains. Mt. Everest and the Khumbu Glacier and their pure whiteness are clearly observable from here. We then head back to Gorakshep, Pheriche, Namche Bazaar and to where we began our trek at Lukla. Our flight from Lukla will draw attention to the vastness of the Himalayas below, even more so now that you have been among and humbled by those glorious mountains.
Sherpa Expedition Teams will organize your permit and take care of all meals and accommodation on the trek.

You will also meet your trekking guide. Please make sure to have your passport, three passport-size photos and a copy of your travel insurance policy. This is also the time to clear the balance of your trek. You will also be asked to sign a disclaimer form.
After landing at Lukla’s Tenzing Hillary Airport at Lukla we head out on the trail to Phakding Village. The first village we come to is Chaurikharka and then head down to the Dudh Koshi (river) and to the village of Ghat (2,530m). Next stop is Phakding Village where we spend time acclimatizing. It is highly recommended that to better acclimatize you remain active, so to this end we will wander around the village and visit the Rimishung Monastery. Tonight we will stay at a guesthouse.
Today is especially important. It is essential that we acclimatize before heading to higher altitudes. Health authorities vigorously recommend that you stay active and keep moving during this period. We will take a short trek to Thame or instead visit Khunde. We can also explore Namche Bazaar, the hub of the Everest Khumbu region. If we are here on either Friday evening or on Saturday we will get to see the regular weekly market. Your guide may also take you higher up the mountain-side to the Tourist Visitor Centre near to the headquarters of the Sagarmatha National Park. It is an appealing place that has on display equipment and relics from the early mountaineers. You can also learn more about the Sherpa people and the distinctive flora and fauna of the region.
We start the day by heading higher and then follow a flat trail to reach Kyanjoma. From here we head down until we come to Tenga and then cross over the Dudh Koshi River to Phunki before arriving at Tengboche Monastery, the most noteworthy monastery in the region.
This morning we make a rapid descent to Debouche and then climb up to Pangboche. On the trail we have some grand views of Everest, Amadablam and Nuptse. We will stop for a tea-break at Pangboche before continuing on to Somare where we will stop for lunch. We will then continue to follow the trail through the Imja Valley and then cross the Lobuche River before heading up to Dingboche (4,410m).
Dingboche is a stunning town surrounded by fields and pastures that are bordered by stone walls to keep out the wind and animals. Today is a dedicated acclimatization period that requires us to keep moving around to facilitate the process. To stay active we can also take a short trek up to Nangkartshang Peak or through the Chhukung Valley. This is a great way to enjoy the countryside and acclimatize.
This is going to be a tough day and will certainly test your fitness as we ascend to Dughla where we will take a break for lunch before continuing on to Lobuche. From Dughla we once again have a steep ascent and along the trail pass the memorial of famous mountaineers, Scott Fischer and Babu Chiri Sherpa. We then come close to the Khumbu Glacier and continue to follow the trail to Lobuche (4,910m).
The initial section of this trek takes us from Gorakshep via the Khumbu Glacier to ultimately EBC. We will stop for a lunch break at Gorakshep and then continue to Everest Base Camp (5,364m). The trail passes across a rough and rocky terrain, across moraines, streams and a glacier before we come to Everest Base Camp that is located in the middle of the Khumbu Glacier. We will then head return to Gorakshep. If the weather is suitable and you have the energy we will trek up to Kala Patthar later in the day to enjoy the amazing sunset over the mountains.
An early start this morning will see us at Kala Patthar where we can observe the sunrise over the mountains. We will spend some time here before heading back to Gorakshep for breakfast and then head off to Pheriche.
The trail this morning heads down to Debouche and then we head up through a rhododendron forest to Tengboche which has a large religious community. From here we have a further steep descent to Phunki Thenga (3,250m/10,663 ft) on the Imja Khola (river). We then continue and head back to Namche Bazaar.
This is our last day on the trail. We first head out to the village of Monju. We take the same route as before to Lukla via Phakding. Along the trail we have extensive views down over the valleys inhabited by the Sherpa people. After arriving at Lukla we have time on our hands and can explore the village. In the evening we will have a dinner with our guides to celebrate the successful achievement of the EBC trek.
Today we have a short 30 to 40-minute scenic flight back to Kathmandu and can look down over the vast Himalayan landscape. On arrival at Kathmandu, we will take you back to your hotel.
