This hiking trip is a perfect opportunity for escaping the crowded streets of the valley and experiencing the back roads. In this hiking trip, you will be visiting various ancient temples having a huge significance in the life of the inhabitants and traversing across lush green hills with views of the Himalayas and the valley down below.
The old Newari settlement of Sankhu is located in the northeast corner of the valley. Sankhu was one of the most significant stops for traders traveling across the old Tibet route. The region treasurer’s ancient architecture of houses, temples, and various sculptures. A traditional settlement that receives a large number of devotees on various festivals all around the year. Explore the streets of Sankhu learning about their ancient history, culture, and legends. Visit the historical Durbar square of Layaku, and explore the narrow streets and old bazaars, of the living museum.
Nagarkot is a hill station located a few kilometers from Sankhu. Nestled at an elevation of 2,175 meters it is the perfect vantage point to witness the landscapes of Kathmandu valley and views of the central and eastern Himalayan range. On a clear day mountain peaks up to Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Jugal, Rolwaling, and Everest can be seen from here. The region is also an ideal destination for travelers to witness grand views during sunrise and sunset, from above the clouds.
The Sankhu Nagarkot Hiking starts with a drive towards the settlement of Sankhu. At Sankhu explore ancient architectural wonders, stroll the narrow streets to get a different perspective of the life of the people, visit ancient temples, learning about the rich culture, legends, and traditions of the people.
After exploring Sankhu, hike across the hills of central Nepal, with grand views of the landscape. Enjoy the fresh air and sounds of nature traversing across lush woodlands and several agricultural belts. On route pass various settlements and get an insight into the life of the people living along the trail. Upon reaching Nagarkot enjoy the grand panoramic views. The valley down below is surrounded by lush rolling hills and white peaks towards the north. After exploring Nagarkot head back towards Kathmandu.

Upon reaching Nagarkot head towards a restaurant and rest. After done with your lunch explore the region. Walk the lush woodlands of the region and bask in the views of the hills and the mountains.
8:00 am: Start hiking from Sankhu/Lapsiphedi to Nagarkot.
After exploring the settlement of Sankhu, head on a lovely hike traversing across the hills of central Nepal. Along the way pass various settlements and lush agricultural belts. Witness grand views of the Kathmandu Valley and the surrounding hills. As you gain altitude witness the snow peaks of the Himalayas. After about 3 to 4 hours of hike, you will reach Nagarkot.
5:00 pm – 05:45 pm: Watch the Sunset view from Nagarkot
Head towards any vantage point or the Nagarkot tower. From here witness mesmerizing views of the sunset. The rays of sun illuminating the snowcapped mountains range and the sky are breathtaking. After experiencing the sunset head towards your transportation.
5:45 pm: Drive back to Kathmandu (32 kilometers)
From Nagarkot head back towards Kathmandu valley. The drive takes you on a zig-zag road along the hills down to Kathmandu Valley. A couple of hours drive and you will be back to your accommodation. Upon reaching your accommodation, freshen up and head out to explore the bustling streets of Thamel.
7:00 am: Pickup at Hotel, drive to Sankhu (25 kilometers)
After an early breakfast at the hotel, you will head on a drive towards Sankhu. A village located in the northeastern part of the valley. An hour or so of the drive will take you to the settlement of Sankhu. Sankhu is known as a living museum, here experiences a mixture of old traditions and new technology. Stroll the narrow streets and witness architectural wonders, visit ancient places and temples and get an insight into the culture and lifestyle of the inhabitants.
