A UNESCO Medina by the Sea

Sousse's old town, enclosed by ninth-century walls, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside its ribat, a fortified monastery once used to watch for raiders along the coast. The Sousse Archaeological Museum, inside the medina, holds one of Tunisia's best collections of Roman mosaics after the Bardo in Tunis.

More Than the Resort

Port El Kantaoui, a purpose-built marina a few kilometers north, adds golf courses and yacht moorings to the standard resort mix. Many Sousse tours also run inland to Kairouan, one of Islam's holy cities, for a look at the Great Mosque and old carpet-weaving workshops before returning to the coast by evening.
