Desert Landscapes Used in Film

Southern Tunisia's troglodyte villages, notably the underground pit dwellings of Matmata, were used as sets for a well-known science-fiction saga, and several still operate as guesthouses where visitors can sleep in the same cave rooms. Fortified granaries called ksour dot the Berber hill country further south around Tataouine and Chenini.

Coast to Sahara in a Short Trip

Tunisia's compact size means a single itinerary can realistically pair Mediterranean coastline with true desert. Douz, known as the gateway to the Sahara, offers camel treks and dune camps within a day's drive of the amphitheatre at El Djem. Spring and autumn bring the mildest temperatures for covering that much ground.
