Goree Island's Weight of History

A short ferry ride from Dakar, Goree Island holds the House of Slaves, a memorial and museum central to the history of the Atlantic slave trade, its Door of No Return facing the ocean. The island itself, car-free and lined with colonial buildings, has an unhurried pace at odds with its history.

Pink Water and a Working Salt Trade

Lake Retba, better known as Lac Rose, turns a distinctive pink from algae and high salt content, and workers still wade in daily to harvest salt much as they have for decades. It is a working site as much as a photo stop.
