Souks of the Medina

Tunis's medina, a UNESCO-listed maze of covered lanes, groups its trades by souk: perfume sellers along Souk el-Attarine, gold and jewelry in Souk el-Berka, once the city's slave market. The Zitouna Mosque, founded in the eighth century, sits at the heart of the old town and remains one of North Africa's most important.

A Light Rail Ride to the Coast

The TGM commuter line links central Tunis to Carthage's scattered Punic and Roman ruins and on to Sidi Bou Said, a hilltop village of blue-shuttered white houses overlooking the Gulf of Tunis. The whole loop is manageable in a single day, mixing archaeology with a cafe stop by the sea.
