Gulhane Park is both a historical and modern park where visitors can spend time and explore history. Once, it was a palace garden, but in 1912 it was opened to the public. It spreads to 163 acres in total and is covered with trees and statues. The statue of Turkish poet Asik Veysel, the first statue of Ataturk which was erected after he founded the Republic, and a Gothic Column from the Romans can be seen in the park. At the same time, the park is the place where Ataturk taught the Latin alphabet to the public for the first time, and when he died the last ceremony in Istanbul was held here in the Sarayburnu section. It is a short walk from the Hippodrome in the center of Sultanahmet Square.
