Alacahoyuk

The archeological digs in Alacahoyuk were started in 1935 and revealed 15 settlements or building levels from four different cultural phases. The first phase represents the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Seljuk-Ottoman periods. The second one is known as the Sphinx Door, and the water channels and temples were found during the digs. The third and fourth layers are dated to the Old Bronze Age and the Late Chalcolithic Ages, respectively. The museum was founded in 1940 and moved to its present location in the ruins in 1982. The most important findings are the royal tombs in the Middle East, which were built with stone and covered with wooden beams and other ancient tools. It is one of the first national excavations in Turkey.
