Alanya Archaeological Museum

Alanya Museum, built in 1967, houses a rich collection of artifacts that shed light on the history of the region. After the renovation work completed in 2012, the museum was redesigned with a modern layout that effectively reflects the historical heritage of Alanya and its surroundings.

The exhibition halls are organized under several main themes, including Anatolian Civilizations, Maritime and Navigation, the Herakles Hall, the Alanya Castle section, and the Coin Collection. In the main hall, the display cases focus on themes such as mythology, trade, and sports and health. In this same hall, visitors can also see figurines, glass artifacts, and jewelry, presented within their thematic contexts.

The most famous artifact of Alanya Museum is the bronze Herakles Statue, dated to the 2nd century AD and standing 52 centimeters tall. Depicted holding his staff in one hand and carrying the lion skin over his arm, Herakles has become the symbol of the museum and is exhibited in a dedicated hall bearing his name.

The oldest artifact on display is a Phoenician stone inscription from 625 BC, discovered in the vicinity of Alanya. Another notable piece in the collection is the star-shaped tile inscribed with the titles of Alaeddin Keykubad, which stands out as one of the museum’s rare treasures.

In the open-air exhibition area of the museum’s garden, visitors can see ossuaries, inscriptions from different periods, and sarcophagi. There is also an agricultural section illustrating olive oil production during the Roman period and the types of tools used in ancient farming.
