Apollon Smintheion Archeological Site

The Apollon Smintheion Temple was one of the holiest places in Asia and Anatolia during the Hellenistic era. It is situated in Canakkale-Dardanells. Despite archeological evidence that the region dates back to 5000 BC, the Smintheion was built in the Ionic style in 150 BC. Around the temple are the altar, bridge, holy road, Roman baths, statues, heroon, and villas. The temple was built by architect Hermogenes in a pseudodipteros (kind of pseudo-twin column) plan, and scenes from Homer’s Iliad can be seen on the reliefs around the temple.
