Erythrae

Erythrae was a settlement between the 8th and 4th centuries BC. It is located in the village of Ildiri, 60 kilometers east of Izmir. The city takes its name from the red soil, and the word Erythrai can be translated as "Red City." In around 133 BC, under Roman rule, the city gained fame with its wine, goats, millstones, and the female oracles Sibyl and Herophile. In the 1st century BC, it was destroyed by earthquakes, wars, and the looting of Roman commanders. The ancient theater, remains of the temple of Athena, and so many pottery, stone, and earthen figures were found during the recent archeological digs.
