Erzurum Castle

Erzurum Castle is a historical heritage dating back to Urartus and consisting of two sections: the inner castle and the exterior castle. The historical resources states that even if the exterior castle dates back to Urartus, Byzantine Emperor Theodosius built the inner section in 415. The soldiers were staying in the inner section while the civilians were residing in the exterior section of the castle. Most of the exterior castle walls were demolished over time; however, the interior castle still stands. Its first wide maintenance was done by Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century, and second one was done by his successor Mahmud II in the 19th century. The government had done the last restoration and landscaping between 2017 and 2020. Nowadays it is a tourist visiting site.
