Harran
Harran was founded by Sumerian traders from Ur in the 25th and 20th centuries BC. and rapidly grew, became a Mesopotamian cultural, commercial, and religious center because of the moon temple of Ekhulkhul was here. After the Assyrians, the Babylonian, Achaemenid, Macedonian, and Seleucid empires reigned in different periods. The Battle of Carrhae, which occurred between the Roman and Parthian (later Sasanian) empires in 53 BC in Harran. It was the greatest military failure in Roman history. Later, the Mongol Empire conquered it in 1260 and abandoned it around the 1270s. It became a Turkish district in 1946, and today it is one of the most visited sites by religious tours.
