Herakleia (Milas)

The ancient city of Herakleia is a quintessential Carian settlement named after the renowned mythological hero Heracles. It is located in Kapikiri Village, 39 kilometers from Milas. Perched on a challenging and craggy terrain, the city was encircled by a 6.5 kilometer long wall fortified with 65 towers. The Temple of Athena, situated on the rocky land behind the harbor, stands as one of the best-preserved structures in the city, featuring two columns in the Templum in Antis style. To the east of the Temple of Athena lies the agora, a marketplace, that consists of two levels, of which the first floor still remains intact today.
