Kars Museum – Kars

Founded in 1959, the Kars Museum was relocated to its current building in 1980, where it continues to serve as one of the most important cultural institutions in northeastern Türkiye.

In the archaeology hall, artifacts are displayed in chronological order, covering a broad historical timeline that begins with the Paleolithic, Neolithic, Chalcolithic, Early Bronze Age, and Iron Age, and continues through the Urartian, Roman, Byzantine, Medieval Beyliks, Seljuk, and Ottoman periods. The collection includes a wide variety of objects such as metal artifacts, stone tools and sculptures, coins, large storage jars (grain jars), and even rare finds like dinosaur bones, reflecting the diverse archaeological heritage of the region.

The ethnography hall presents objects that illustrate the social, cultural, economic, and military life of the people who lived in Kars and its surroundings during the 18th and 19th centuries and the early 20th century. Exhibits include woven carpets and kilims, silver belts, handwritten manuscripts, kitchen utensils, and various ornamental items, offering visitors a vivid picture of traditional daily life and craftsmanship.

In the museum garden, visitors can see animal-shaped tombstones and various architectural elements dating from the Akkoyunlu, Karakoyunlu, Armenian, and Georgian periods. These outdoor exhibits provide insight into the funerary traditions and architectural styles of different civilizations that once flourished in the region.

As a regional museum, the Kars Museum houses movable cultural assets originating from the provinces of Kars, Ardahan, Ağrı, and Iğdır. The majority of the archaeological artifacts come from excavations carried out at the Ani Archaeological Site, as well as from surface surveys conducted throughout the region. The ethnographic collections, on the other hand, were acquired mainly through purchases from Kars, Ardahan, Ağrı, and Iğdır, ensuring the preservation of local cultural heritage.
