Kaymakli Underground City

Like other underground cities that are located in Cappadocia, Kaymakli is an underground city that is formed in tuff rocks by the carving method. It has 8 floors, consisting of rooms and halls, wine storage, water cellars, kitchens and supply stores, ventilation shafts, water wells, and a church that are connected by tunnels, and it is connected with Derinkuyu Underground City too. Between 780 and 1180, the city was used for protection against Arab raids during the Arab-Byzantine wars, and then again in the 14th century against Timur's Mongolian incursions. Since it first opened to the public in 1964, the villagers have used its sections to store food and wine. Presently, it is one of the most visited historical sites in Nevsehir city.
