Metropolis Archaeological Site

The Metropolis Archaeological Site is located in Izmir's Torbali District halfway between Yenikoy and Ozbey Village. The historic location was found by European explorers J. Spon and G. Wheeler in the 17th century. It was founded in 3 BC during the Seleucid Empire era, and was a splendid city throughout the Hellenistic era. The word "Metropolis" means "Mother Goddess City," and the statue that gave the name to the city was found in Uyuzdere. The ruins of the theater, the Peristillium House, the Acropolis, the Stoa, the Upper Baths, and the Gymnasium can be visited.
