Mor Gabriel Monastery

Mor Gabriel is a Syriac Orthodox monastery situated on the Tur Abdin plateau, close to Midyat and Mardin Province. It is also called as Dayro d-Mor Gabriel or Deyrulumur and is the oldest surviving one arount the earth. The monastery was built in 397 and became a center of both culture and Coptic monks in around 6th century. According to the rumor the ascetic Mor Shmu'el’s student Mor Shem'un had a dream one night that an angel was pointing out the monastery’s location. Later, Mor Samuel and Mor Simon had found the place and built the monastery. Throughout its history, it was one of the most famous monasteries and today it still has a community.
