Oshki Monastery

According to the records, the Oshki monastery was built between 963 and 973 and dedicated to St. John the Baptist. This one is considered one of the most complex and biggest monasteries erected anywhere in the Eastern Christian world and one of the Four Great Cathedrals of the Georgian Orthodox world. According to historians, the Grand Duke/King Bagrat II of Tao and David III of Tao financed it. The architect was Grigol. 


At the interior decoration symbol of the victory eagle, the archangels Michael and Gabriel are located as reliefs. the transitional period in medieval Georgian art can be observed in the church’s interior decorations and it is proof that the old style has not disappeared yet.
