Pepuza Ancient City

Pepuza Ancient City is located in the Aegean Region of Usak Province. It was one of the ancient cities of Phrygia, in Asia Minor. The city was the headquarters of an early Christian movement called Montanism from the 2nd century to the middle of the 6th century. Montanists believed that Jerusalem would descend to earth at Pepouza, where the Montanist patriarch resided. Even though it was extinct in the sixth century, women were permitted to become priests and bishops. The site was a settlement throughout the Byzantine period in Anatolia, and the city has a significant rock-cut monastery. It is also called Pepouza.
