Pirin (Perre) Archaeological Site

Pirin, also known as Perre, Me'arath, Gaza, or Poron in ancient sources, was one of the five major cities of the ancient Commagene Kingdom. It is situated at the crossroads of the ancient cities Melitene (now Malatya province) and Samosata, the capital. Later during the Byzantine era, it was the gate for the west to the Persians and joined the Bible Council in Nicea in 325 AD. It was known as Hierapolis, meaning "holy city," in this period. The archeological digs that were done between 2001 and 2009 revealed the necropolis and the mosaics.
