Rila Monastery

Rila is the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria and is considered one of the most important cultural and historical landmarks in the country. A local hermit and monk named Saint Ivan of Rila established the monastery in the tenth century. It is renowned for its intricate frescoes, lovely architecture, and tranquil setting and has been rebuilt and expanded over the centuries. Currently it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
