Rock Tombs of Pontic Kings

Amasya province was the capital of the Pontus Kingdom between 302 BC and 26 BC. The tombs were carved into the limestone rocks to the foothills of Amasya Castle. It has been known that the tombs belong to Mithridates I of Pontus, who is the founder of the Kingdom of Pontus, his son Ariobarzanes, and Mithridates II. It is possible to reach these tombs by passing through a stepped tunnel carved into the stones in the southwest of the region. It has been known that along the Yesilirmak Valley there are 21 rock tombs, but few of them could be reached today.
