Saros Gulf

The Saros Gulf, also known as Melas Kolpos in ancient times, is situated in the northern part of the Aegean Sea. It is a triangular indentation that stretches for about 60 kilometers between the Gallipoli Peninsula in the south and the Thracian coast in the north. The Saros Bay, which is one of the saltiest parts of the Aegean Sea, is characterized by complex eddying currents that make it a self-cleaning gulf. It is one of only five such gulfs in the world. Thanks to the high oxygen content of its waters and the abundant nutrient salts brought in by the rivers that flow into it, the Saros Gulf is an important fishing area rich in a variety of species. As a result, there are numerous summer houses and tourist establishments on both shores.
