St. Savior in Chora (Kariye Museum)

St. Savior in Chora was built in the 4th century and underwent several renovations and additions over the centuries, culminating in a major renovation in the 14th century. The interior of the church is renowned for its stunning Byzantine mosaics and frescoes, which depict scenes from the lives of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, and other important figures in Christian history. The mosaics and frescoes are considered to be some of the best examples of Byzantine art in the world. Following the fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century, the church was converted into a mosque and underwent several additional renovations. In 1948, it was converted into a museum, and today it is known as the Kariye Museum. The museum is open to visitors and is a popular tourist destination in Istanbul.
