Stone School (Tas Mektep)

The Stone School was commissioned between 1904 and 1909 by Chirisostomos, a Tirilye native who returned to Turkey as a metropolitan bishop after receiving his education in Greece. Today, the school stands as a significant historical landmark. Rumors suggest that Cypriot Greek Archbishop Makarios also attended this school. The principal, Chirisostomos, eventually became the metropolitan bishop of Izmir. The Stone School is a neo-classical building that reflects the western architectural style of that era. Due to the decline of the Greek population in Tirilye, the school was transformed into an orphanage in 1924. It functioned as both a primary and secondary school until 1986, after which it was closed down in 1989. The building underwent restoration in 2017.
