Surmene

Surmene is a district and small town in Trabzon Province, Turkey, near the Black Sea. It is located about 40 kilometers (25 miles) east of Trabzon and was formerly called Susarmia or Augustopolis. The town lies on the River Kora and is most renowned for the story of Xenophon and his Ten Thousand falling ill after consuming wild honey, an event that was confirmed by the local population. Surmene is home to the beautifully restored 18th-century Yakupoglu Memis Aga mansion, traditional local houses, the Surmene Castle and Viewing Terrace, and the Camburnu Forest.
