Syedra Ancient City

Syedra is an ancient city located 23 km east of Alanya on the Alanya-Mersin highway. The ruins have a history dating back to the 7th century BC. The city was inhabited from the 7th century BC to the 13th century AD and had a very large residential area surrounded by walls. The site contains rows of large plastered cisterns that were fed from a natural water source and still survive today, as well as a baptismal cave in ruins, a bath with mosaics on the floor, a gymnasium, a colonnaded street, a temple, a theater, churches, acropolis, and necropolis areas. It serves as an exemplary Roman settlement. Also it has been known that the Roman General Pompey held his last war council in 48 BCE in Syedra, before his fatal voyage to Egypt.
