Taksim Square

The word Taksim means "division" or "distribution" and its origins is Arabic. There was a stone reservoir in this area around the 18th century to collected and branched off water to the city. In time the square takes its name from that stone reservoir, it can still be seen on the square. In the 19th century Taksim Artillery Barracks than the Taksim Stadium were taking place here. Atatürk Cultural Center (Atatürk Kültür Merkezi) is also located in the square that was the fourth largest art center in the world when it was opened in 1969. It become a symbol of the square for decades and was a stage for multi-purpose cultural events and opera house. It renewed and opened in 2021.

The square is the center of city’s main public transportation systems and still is the center of meeting point for events such as New Year's Eve, Republic Day celebrations, or mass-screenings of important football matches and else.
