Teos Ancient Site

Teos is an ancient port city in the Izmir province of Turkey. It was founded on the Isthmus peninsula, about 60 kilometers south of Izmir. According to a legend, Teos was founded by Athamas, the son of Dionysus, the God of Wine, in the 1000s BC. The Temple of Dionysus, which was built by Hermogenes, who was a famous architect of the Hellenistic period, was the largest one in Anatolia. The resources have two claims about who founded the city. Cretans descended from Achaeans founded Teos, according to one claim, or it has been a settlement since the Protogeometric Period. Today the Dionysus Temple, which was one of the largest temples in Anatolia, the acropolis, the bouleuterion, and the theatr can be visited.
