The Red Basilica (Serapis Temple)

The Red Basilica has been considered that the Red Basilica was built in the Roman era by the order of Hadrian and is one of the biggest Roman structures still surviving. It was most likely used to worship the Egyptian gods Isis, Serapis, Osiris, and/or Harpocrates, and the historical resources mention its magnificent size which might be immense, even larger than the Temple of Jupiter in Baalbek. It was built smartly on a bridge over the River Selinus. As the ruins have demonstrated, the temple was surrounded by various drains, water channels, and basins, most probably to symbolize the reenactment of the flooding of the Nile. Other clues have shown that it was converted to a Christian church and later dedicated to St. John. The Red Basilica is one of the most breathtaking destinations in the Bergama District.
