The Theatre at Hierapolis
Probably constructed in Hadrian’s reign around 62 AD. During the Roman emperor, Septimius Severus’s reign in 206, the stage changed with a bigger and new one and sculptural reliefs that are displaying mythological scenes and others which are showing Septimius Severus and his family are added. The reliefs are demonstrating the scenes from mythology that are The birth of Apollo and Artemis, the music competition between Marsyas and Apollo, the wars between the gods and the giants, and others… 15,000 audiences could watch the venationes (A kind of entertainment which consists of hunting and killing wild animals in Roman amphitheaters) and gladiator shows at a time.
It collapse because of an earthquake in the 7th century, from 1934 to 2013 there were restorations works done by the government and today it is a 12.000 capacity theater that can host artistic events. It is one of the significant ancient theatres around the Mediterranean.
