Town Walls in Rhodes

The Town Walls in Rhodes feature some of the world's finest examples of medieval fortifications. The walls were initially built during the Byzantine era and were later extended and reinforced by the knights between the 14th and 16th centuries due to their fear of enemy attacks. The walls measure four kilometers in length, and some parts are as thick as 12 meters. They include imposing towers, bastions, several gates, and a dry moat. Despite the knights' efforts, in 1522, after a six-month siege, they eventually surrendered to the Ottoman Turks. Today, it is one of the most visited sites on the island.
