According to sources, the Ulu Mosque was built between 1170 and 1175 on the ruins of the Red Church. It is also known that wealthy locals financed it instead of a sultans or another administrators. It was repaired in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Because of its red marble columns, it is called "Mescid ul-Hamra", which means "the Red Mosque." It has been believed that a handkerchief that Jesus sent to King Abgar V by his apostle Thomas was thrown into the well in the private section of the mosque. It was restored in 2011 and is open to visitors and worship.
