Jamestown's Old Fishing Quarter

Accra's oldest neighborhood, Jamestown, still runs on the rhythm of its fishing fleet, with brightly painted wooden boats pulled up on the beach below a colonial-era lighthouse open for climbing. Street art has spread across many of the surrounding walls in recent years, part of an annual festival that has made the district a draw for photographers.

Independence and Everyday Commerce

Black Star Square and the Independence Arch mark Ghana's break from British rule in 1957, the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence, and both sit close to the busy stalls of Makola Market. Evenings tend to shift toward Osu, a district of restaurants and bars that stays lively well after the markets close.
