A Castle That Carries Hard History

Cape Coast Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, held enslaved people in its dungeons before they were shipped across the Atlantic through what is now known as the Door of No Return. Guided tours through the cells are somber and detailed, and many visitors pair the castle with nearby Elmina, an even older Portuguese-built fort from 1482.

Rainforest Canopy Nearby

Cape Coast served as the capital of the British Gold Coast until 1877, and its fishing harbor and colonial-era buildings still shape the town's waterfront. Kakum National Park, about forty minutes inland, adds a change of pace with a rope canopy walkway strung high above the rainforest floor.
