An Island of Two Halves

Skyros splits neatly down the middle: pine forest and sandy bays in the north, bare limestone and goat tracks in the south. Tours of Skyros Island usually base themselves in Chora, a stack of white cube houses beneath a Byzantine castle rock facing the Aegean.

What Gives the Island Its Character

Craft traditions run deep here, from carved wooden furniture to embroidered linens displayed in village houses. The small Skyrian horse, an ancient pony breed found only on the island, can be visited at local sanctuaries. In the far south, the poet Rupert Brooke lies buried in an olive grove near Tris Boukes bay, a quiet detour on round-island drives.
