What makes this tour special
Itinerary
Depart Nairobi and journey southwest towards the legendary Maasai Mara National Reserve, travelling approximately 270–300 km over 5–6 hours, depending on your route, road conditions and stops along the way. As you descend the dramatic escarpment into the Great Rift Valley, pause to admire the sweeping views across one of Kenya’s most remarkable geological landscapes. Continuing through the countryside, the scenery gradually transforms into vast, open grasslands dotted with acacia trees, where the golden savannah stretches towards the horizon and the Mara River winds through this wildlife-rich wilderness.
Arrive at Sarova Mara Game Camp in time for lunch, followed by a chance to settle into your comfortable tented accommodation and soak up the atmosphere of the African bush. Located within the Maasai Mara National Reserve, the camp offers an immersive safari experience, combining the charm of canvas accommodation with thoughtful comforts and views of the surrounding plains.
In the afternoon, set out on your first game drive, beginning your search for Africa’s iconic Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. Along the way, look out for grazing zebras, roaming wildebeest, graceful giraffes and the many other animals that make the Mara such an extraordinary destination. Every turn brings the possibility of a memorable encounter, whether it is a lion resting in the grass or an elephant family moving across the plains.
As evening approaches, return to camp and unwind as the African sky glows with the colours of sunset. Gather around the campfire, where the day’s sightings become stories shared beneath the stars. Enjoy a delicious dinner and the evocative sounds of the wilderness settling into night — a fitting introduction to the magic of the Maasai Mara.
Meal Plan: Lunch and dinner
Spend an unforgettable day exploring the vast, wildlife-rich plains of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, one of Africa’s most celebrated safari destinations. Set out on morning and afternoon game drives, following the tracks of the Big Cats as lions patrol the open grasslands and elusive leopards seek refuge among the riverine forests. Watch elephants move gracefully across the savannah, encounter mighty buffalo herds, and discover the many other species that bring this remarkable ecosystem to life.
Between July and October, the Mara may become the stage for one of nature’s greatest spectacles: the Great Wildebeest Migration. Witness thousands of wildebeest and zebras gathering along the Mara River, where dramatic crossings may unfold as they navigate crocodile-filled waters in search of fresh grazing. These crossings are unpredictable, making every moment in the wilderness unique.
Beyond the migration season, the Maasai Mara remains exceptional year-round, with abundant resident wildlife, diverse birdlife and ever-changing savannah scenery. With your experienced safari guide leading the way, each game drive offers new discoveries, fascinating wildlife behaviour and opportunities to capture extraordinary moments in the heart of wild Africa.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, picnic lunch and dinner
Bid farewell to the sweeping savannahs of the Maasai Mara as you journey north through Kenya’s spectacular Great Rift Valley towards Lake Nakuru National Park. Covering approximately 300 km in around 5.5 hours, this scenic drive offers glimpses of rural life, rolling landscapes and the dramatic escarpments that define this remarkable region.
Arrive at Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge in time for lunch, followed by an opportunity to settle into your accommodation and take in the peaceful surroundings. Perched on the scenic slopes overlooking Lake Nakuru, the lodge offers beautiful panoramic views across the lake and its wildlife-rich landscape, providing a relaxing base for your exploration of the park.
Nestled within the Rift Valley, Lake Nakuru National Park is a compact yet wildlife-rich sanctuary renowned for its exceptional biodiversity and birdlife. The lake’s alkaline waters can attract impressive concentrations of lesser and greater flamingos, sometimes transforming its shoreline into a spectacular pink panorama, depending on water levels and food availability.
Beyond its celebrated birdlife, the park is an important stronghold for both black and white rhinos, offering rewarding opportunities to observe these magnificent animals in their natural habitat. Keep your eyes open for the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe, gracefully browsing among the park’s distinctive fever trees, as well as lions, buffaloes, zebras and other wildlife.
In the afternoon, set out on a game drive through the park’s varied habitats, discovering its remarkable wildlife and enjoying the ever-changing scenery. As the day draws to a close, return to the lodge or enjoy the elevated viewpoints around Lion Hill for sweeping views across the lake and surrounding landscape. Watch the Rift Valley glow in the golden light of sunset before settling in for a relaxing evening, dinner and an overnight stay at Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Begin your final morning with an early game drive through Lake Nakuru National Park, enjoying one last opportunity to encounter its remarkable wildlife against the backdrop of the shimmering lake and the scenic Great Rift Valley. Keep your camera ready for any last-minute sightings of rhinos, Rothschild’s giraffes, buffaloes and the park’s abundant birdlife.
After this memorable farewell to the wild, enjoy a comfortable drive back to Nairobi, with a packed lunch provided for the journey. Covering approximately 160 km in around 3 hours, the return journey offers time to reflect on the unforgettable wildlife encounters, breathtaking landscapes and special moments shared throughout your four-day Kenyan safari.
