Itinerary
Begin your adventure with a drive from Nairobi to Lake Nakuru National Park, renowned for its stunning birdlife and scenic beauty. After checking in to your lodge, head out for an afternoon game drive, where you’ll be treated to the sight of thousands of flamingos that often gather around the lake, creating a pink-hued spectacle. In addition to flamingos, Lake Nakuru is home to over 400 bird species, including pelicans, herons, and eagles. The park is also a haven for wildlife, including rhinos, giraffes, zebras, and lions. Spend the night at a lodge or camp near the park.
After an early breakfast, depart Lake Nakuru and head towards the Masai Mara National Reserve. This renowned reserve is not only famous for its wildlife but also for being the epicenter of the Great Wildebeest Migration. Arrive in the Mara by midday and enjoy a delicious lunch before setting out for an afternoon game drive. Depending on the timing of your visit, you may witness the incredible migration of over 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by zebras and gazelles, making their way across the Mara River. The sight of predators like lions, cheetahs, and crocodiles is also thrilling. Spend the night in a lodge or camp in or near the reserve.
Today, immerse yourself fully in the wonders of the Masai Mara. Start with an early morning game drive to catch the animals at their most active, as the wildebeest migration continues across the plains. This is also a great opportunity for birdwatching, as the Mara is home to a variety of species such as vultures, secretary birds, ostriches, and a host of raptors. After a midday break, head out again for an afternoon game drive to witness more of the migration and the drama of predator-prey interactions. Vaccinations and Health Precautions: A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for entry into both Kenya and Tanzania, so be sure to get vaccinated if you haven't already. Anti-malarial medication is also highly recommended, as both countries have areas with malaria-carrying mosquitoes.
Packing Essentials: Prepare for a range of temperatures by packing lightweight clothing, layers for cool mornings and evenings, a wide-brimmed hat, and comfortable walking shoes for game drives. Don’t forget binoculars, which make a big difference for spotting wildlife in the distance.
