Tour Overview

The Champadevi Day Hike is one of the most popular short treks around the Kathmandu Valley, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural experience, and light physical challenge. Located to the southwest of Kathmandu, Champadevi Hill (2,285 meters) is the third highest hill in the valley and provides stunning panoramic views of the Himalayas, Kathmandu Valley, and surrounding countryside.

The hike typically starts from Pharping or Hattiban, both about an hour’s drive from central Kathmandu. The well-marked trail leads through lush pine forests, small villages, and Buddhist monasteries, eventually reaching the Champadevi shrine at the summit, which is sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists.

It’s a moderately easy hike, taking around 5–6 hours round trip, making it ideal for travelers with limited time who want to experience Nepal’s outdoors without committing to a multi-day trek. On clear days, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking views of mountain ranges such as Langtang, Ganesh Himal, and even glimpses of Mount Everest in the far distance.

Perfect for nature lovers, photographers, and those seeking a spiritual and peaceful escape, the Champadevi Day Hike offers a rejuvenating experience close to the hustle and bustle of the city.

Itinerary

Drive from Kathmandu to Pharping (Approx. 1 hour)

Your day begins with a scenic drive from your hotel in Kathmandu to the traditional town of Pharping, located on the southern edge of the valley. The drive takes around 1 hour, passing through bustling neighborhoods, terraced fields, and rural landscapes. Pharping is a culturally rich area with ancient Buddhist monasteries and Hindu temples, including the famous Dakshinkali Temple and Asura Cave, a sacred site for Tibetan Buddhists.

Hike from Pharping to Champadevi Hill (Approx. 3–4 hours uphill)

From Pharping, your hike begins with a gradual ascent through peaceful forests of pine and rhododendron. The trail offers a mix of well-defined paths and stone steps, with occasional resting spots and viewpoints. As you climb higher, the views open up, revealing stunning panoramas of the Kathmandu Valley, and on clear days, the Himalayan ranges, including Langtang, Gauri Shankar, and even distant glimpses of Everest.

Reaching the Champadevi summit (2,285m) takes about 3 to 4 hours, depending on your pace. At the top, you'll find a small shrine and Buddhist stupa, often adorned with colorful prayer flags. This hill is sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists, making it a spiritually enriching stop. It’s a perfect place to rest, enjoy a packed lunch or snacks, and take in the serene surroundings.

Hike from Champadevi to Hattiban (Approx. 2 hours downhill)

After enjoying the summit, descend along a forested ridge toward Hattiban, which takes around 2 hours. The downhill path is gentle and shaded, making for a relaxing return walk. Hattiban is a peaceful area often used for retreats and yoga camps, and the surrounding forest is home to a variety of birdlife.

Drive from Hattiban to Kathmandu (Approx. 30 minutes)

From Hattiban, your vehicle will be waiting to drive you back to Kathmandu. The drive takes about 30 minutes, returning you to the comfort of your hotel by late afternoon or early evening.
