Tour Overview
After Sultanahmet Square, which is located in the old city, Istiklal Avenue, Taksim Square, and the Pera district are the second most popular tourist destinations in Istanbul. The area also has rich historical narratives and a bustling atmosphere, making it a must-see destination for visitors.
Highlights
Itinerary
The tour begins with a pick-up from the hotel. Pera was a rural district outside the old city walls in the 16th century. Afterwards, especially the chiristians who come from Galata and the ambassadors who are located around Beyoglu are the first residents and the ones who help to develop the district. Through the centuries, it became the shopping and cultural center of the city.
Today we will discover the region by walking along Istiklal Avenue, one of the busiest pedestrian streets in Istanbul, and in the Pera district. Istiklal is filled with cafes, patisseries, theaters, shopping centers, and restaurants of all kinds. The first stop will be the French Cultural Institute, which brings French culture. Today, it is the house of so many events, such as exhibitions, film screenings, and conferences.
Next, we will visit the largest Greek Orthodox church in Istanbul; the Hagia Triada Eastern Orthodox Church. It was built in 1880 in a neo-baroque style with elements of a basilica, a neo-gothic façade, and a large dome. After the fall of Constantinople in 1453, it was the first domed Christian church allowed to be built in Istanbul. After that, we will visit the Aga Mosque, which was constructed in the 16th century and is known for its spectacular example of Turkish stone carving.
The Ciek Passage, which can be translated as Flower Passage, is the next destination. The original name was 'Cite de Pera', and it was built as an opera house, but after a fire, it was acquired by Hristaki Zorafos Efendi. Later, noble Russian women opened flower shops here during the Russian Revolution, and it started to be called Cicek Pasaji. Today, it is full of restaurants. Galatasaray High School, the oldest high school in the Ottoman Empire, is across from it and is still a school today.
The Church of St. Anthony of Padua and the Crimea Memorial Church right in front are the next spots. There is no doubt that St. Anthony of Padua is one of the most visited sites in the region.
Cezayir Street, which is a dead end right behind Galatasaray High School, is a place where visitors can explore the French influences. In the 2000s, the street was transformed into a kind of meeting and event center and also called Franch Street.
Afterward, we will visit the Crimea Memorial Church, which was constructed in the 19th century by Sultan Abdulmecit to honor the British soldiers who joined the Crimean War on the Ottoman and French sides. The Tunnel and the Pera Palace Hotel are the last two sites of this tour. The Pera Palace Hotel, both a museum and a hotel, is the oldest European hotel in Istanbul. It was built to provide lodging for guests traveling on the Orient Express. The Tunnel is the second-oldest subterranean urban rail line in the world, and it is the last stop of the tour.
