Izmit is located on the east coast of the Izmit Gulf of the Marmara region. It was formerly known as Nicomedia and comes from Nicomedes I of Bithynia. It is referred to as the "dark period" because no comprehensive exploration of the history of Izmit was made before the 12th century. It is known that the city, which became one of the most important cities in the Hellenistic period, was founded by the Greeks of Megara under the name Nicomedia. Later, the Romans ruled, and Rome became one of the four metropolises of the Roman Empire, along with Antioch and Alexandria. Due to its proximity to Istanbul's old city, it has been plundered many times over the centuries by Persians, Arabs, and Crusaders. It has been a Turkish district since the 14th century. Kasr-i Humayun Palace Museum, also known as the hunting lodge, Ali Efendi Mansion, Selim Sirri Pasha Mansion, Gayret Ship Museum, and Seka Park are the popular tourist attractions in Izmit.
