German Foundation Tours

The German Fountain is a gift from the German Emperor Wilhelm II to Sultan Abdulhamid II, that he had come to İstanbul 3 times for commercial purposes. After the Baghdad Railway agreement had been done between the Ottomans and Germany, Emperor Wilhelm had prepared the fountain in Germany, shipped it to İstanbul piece by piece, and inaugurated it in 1901.


The Fountain style is Neo-Byzantine and its dome evokes the renaissance architectural features that is why it is identified as German Neo-Renaissance and its decorations items were designed using typical Byzantine elements that the wave did not widespread around the city. Karaköy Palace, Maçka Palace, and Fener Greek High School are the other civilian samples of the Neo-Byzantine style in İstanbul.
