Gateway to the White Desert

Bahariya Oasis tours are mostly about what lies beyond the palm groves. Some 370 kilometers southwest of Cairo, the oasis is the standard staging point for overnight trips into the White Desert National Park, where wind-carved chalk mushrooms and spires glow under a full moon.

The Route South

Jeeps leave Bahariya and cross the Black Desert's dark volcanic cones, pause at Crystal Mountain's quartz ridge, then drop into the white formations in time for sunset. Camps are simple: mattresses, blankets, a windbreak, dinner cooked over coals and desert foxes visiting after dark.

Around the Oasis Itself

Before or after the desert night, tours usually fit in a soak in a warm spring, the palm gardens of Bawiti and the small museum linked to the Valley of the Golden Mummies discoveries.
