Dahshur Tours

Dahshur Tours visit a pyramid field roughly 40 kilometers south of Cairo, quieter than Giza or Saqqara despite holding two of Egypt's most historically significant pyramids. Built under Pharaoh Sneferu in the 26th century BC, the site marks a turning point in pyramid design, the moment Egyptian builders worked out how to build a true, smooth-sided pyramid.

The Bent Pyramid

Sneferu's first attempt at a true pyramid, the Bent Pyramid gets its name from a visible change in angle partway up its sides, where builders reduced the slope after apparent structural concerns with the original steeper design. Much of its original limestone casing survives, making it one of the better preserved pyramids in Egypt despite standing more than 4,500 years.

The Red Pyramid

Built after the Bent Pyramid, the Red Pyramid takes its name from the reddish limestone exposed where its outer casing has worn away. At roughly 105 meters, it was the first successfully completed smooth-sided pyramid, a design later refined by Sneferu's son Khufu at Giza, and visitors can descend a narrow passage into its interior chambers.

Dahshur Compared to Giza

Dahshur receives a fraction of the visitors that Giza does, largely because the site sat inside a restricted military zone until it opened to tourism in the 1990s. That history left both pyramids notably less crowded, with fewer vendors and a more open desert setting around the monuments. Several smaller, ruined pyramids and mudbrick mastaba tombs from later dynasties are scattered across the same site, though the Bent and Red Pyramids remain the main draw for most visitors.

Getting to Dahshur

Most visitors reach Dahshur by private car or organized tour from Cairo, a drive of roughly 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic and the starting point. The site is rarely visited alone, since combining it with Saqqara and Memphis makes better use of the drive south from the capital, and no public transport route serves the pyramid field directly.

Best Time to Visit Dahshur

October through April brings milder desert temperatures suited to walking between the pyramids and descending into the Red Pyramid's interior passages. Midday visits during summer months can be uncomfortably hot, so early morning tours are the more practical choice between May and September.
